Political Responses
In the above picture, you are taking a look at two Canadian Prime Ministers who had an impact on the Great Depression and the way the country responded to it. On the left is Richard Bedford Bennett, the PM who succeeded the PM on the right, William Lyon Mackenzie King. After the Great Depression, Mackenzie King did little, if anything, to support those who were impacted by the Depression. Though, after Bennett replaced King as the PM, Bennett did take action. One of the notable things that Bennett did was that he introduced the New Deal, similar to the New Deal presented by Franklin Roosevelt, the U.S. President who took over in 1933. Political parties also emerged because of the Depression, and two of them were the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Union nationale.
