The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation
The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, known as the CCF, was founded in the Prairie provinces in 1932. The CCF was the first socialist party in Canada, and they believed that capitalism was a major cause of the Depression. Their party platform was known as the Regina Manifesto, and they opposed free-market economics. The CCF was in favour of public ownership of major industries, and in each Canadian deriving equal benefits from the government's control of the economy. In addition, the party promoted social programs to assist the elderly, the unemployed, the homeless, and the ill. In today's world, the CCF is known as the New Democratic Party, the NDP. They are a socialist party that advocate similar ideas.
