Maurice Duplessis, a former Conservative, united with some Liberals to form the Union nationale. This party was in support of Quebec nationalism, which is the movement for the security and maintenance of Quebecois culture and language. During the Great Depression, Quebec's economy was controlled by the English minority. For that reason, Duplessis pointed the finger at them for causing social and economic problems within Quebec. Like the CCF, the Union nationale aimed to improve working conditions and have social insurance programs. The Union nationale was different from the CCF because they only focused on Quebec, and secondly, they advocated specifically for publicly owned power companies, along with a system of farm credits.
